NATO Pushes the World to the Edge over Ukraine

27-01-2022: The world is once again threatened with nuclear war by the reckless and unhinged actions of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) powers, and their relentless hostility towards the Russian Federation. The West’s corporate media scream with baseless claims that “Russia is about to invade Ukraine”, when the government of Russia repeatedly denies even considering it. In fact the governments of the United States of America (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) have, every year since 2014, been warning that “Russia is about to invade Ukraine” – but it has never happened.[1] In 2014, the US government orchestrated the overthrow of the then Ukrainian government by animating “UkroNazis” and ultra-right wing anti-Russian paramilitaries.[2] The target of the US and NATO at that time was Russia, as it is today. US imperialism has no scruples of course and did not baulk at funding and arming ISIS and Al Qaeda in Syria nor literal Nazis in Ukraine to further its desperate aims.

EuroMaidan coup forces break up of Ukraine

The violent 2014 “EuroMaidan” coup in Kiev was another step towards the encirclement of Russia, long planned by the architects of NATO. With breathless hypocrisy, Western corporate media such as the UK’s The Guardian today claims that in 2014, Russia “invaded” Ukraine, and “annexed” Crimea.[3] Little could be further from the truth. In reality, the US government installed anti-Russian extremists in power in Kiev, which was backed by the Nazi inspired Azov Battalion and Right Sector barbarians. Crimea, historically and overwhelmingly ethnically Russian, voted in a referendum to rejoin Russia. With a turnout of 81.37%, more than 95% of Crimeans wholeheartedly voted in favour of returning to Russia.[4] Given these figures, it is preposterous to claim this was an “annexation”. Almost all Crimeans view themselves as Russian, and given the other option was to live under a Nazi led fascistic coup government, it is not surprising they voted the way they did.

Similarly, in the Donbass region in the east of Ukraine, over 90% of the residents in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions voted in a referendum to establish their own republics, and reject the US backed Nazis holding sway in Kiev.[5] Since that time, the Ukrainian government has waged war against the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), creating chaos. The West of course claim that Donetsk and Lugansk are “Russian backed”, but in fact the Russian government has never moved into the areas, only provides some economic assistance to the Donbass (which briefly merged to form Novorossiya) and has not even officially recognised the DPR nor the LPR.[6] Despite the Russian government’s abundant caution, the DPR, the LPR and Crimea should be defended by workers of the world against encroachment by US backed and Nazi inspired ultra-right wing forces based in Kiev. All working people have the right to live free from any form of fascism.

European governments divided

The governments of Europe are not united behind Washington’s extreme provocations of Russia. The UK government has made risible claims that Russia could install a puppet government in Kiev,[7] further inflaming tensions. On the other hand, the German government needs to continue a working relationship with Russia, and not only with regard to gas supplies via the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Recently, German naval Vice-Admiral Kay-Achim Schonbach resigned from his post after making comments that Russian President Vladimir Putin “deserved respect”, that Crimea is “never” returning to Ukraine, and that it was “nonsense” to suggest that Russia is interested in a “tiny strip of Ukrainian soil”.[8] Russia’s main concern – which has been emphatically expressed to the West for many years – is that Ukraine cannot be allowed to join NATO. Unfortunately, the US government firmly rejected these entirely reasonable demands during recent US-Russia and US-NATO negotiations.[9]

Washington also tried to drag in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), with an evidence-free claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping allegedly requested that President Putin delay his alleged invasion of Ukraine until after the Beijing Winter Olympics had taken place. PRC Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian angrily denounced such reports as “sheer fiction” and an attempt to drive a wedge between Russia and the PRC.[10] While throwing unfounded accusations at Russia and China, the US state itself continues to light dangerous fires itself within Ukraine. Yahoo News reported last week that the CIA’s Ground Branch has been overseeing a secret training program for Ukrainian special operations forces since 2015. One former CIA official stated that the program, conducted at an undisclosed based in southern USA, is “training an insurgency” which teaches Ukrainians how “to kill Russians” !![11]

An impending world war would be in effect the culmination of the Covid deception perpetrated by Western imperialism. While a novel coronavirus may exist, the deliberate economic depression enforced for two years was an attempt to “re-set” global capitalism at the cost of limitless horror and historically unprecedented political repression of the working class. Two years of lockdowns has not produced economic “green shoots”, so the last resort of the ruling classes is a world war. That the Russian government also entertained the fraudulent Covid narrative is yet another example that no amount of appeasement and capitulation to the ludicrous agenda of Washington and London will deter them from using any form of extreme violence against you.

The working people of the world have a unique opportunity to end both Covid repression and the threat of world war. From out of the freedom movement must emerge clear working-class leadership and a struggle for strike committees which can serve as a basis for incipient organs of alternative state power. All parties which demand an end to the abolition of basic civil and democratic rights should be included. Within this layer, Marxists must work to convince the freedom movement that socialism is not the enemy, and that the only escape from totalitarianism and world war stems from building a workers’ state. This state must be defended against all reaction – including and especially the “progressive” Covid fanatics. Capitalism is in its death throes – now it must be overthrown. NO WAR ON RUSSIA!
