Stop the Wars on the Global South!

STATEMENT OF THE WORKERS LEAGUE

04-07-2026: Imperialism is at war, in multiple theatres, across several continents, in various regions. Yet these wars in effect constitute a single war with different fronts against an entity which comprises 90% of the world’s population – the Global South. The Global South contains, but is not limited to, the non-imperialist BRICS confederation (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa plus 15 other states), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Imperialism is also at war with the working class of “their own” states – the United States of America (US), European Union (EU) pillar nations such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom (UK), Italy, and subordinate imperialist vassal states such as Australia, Canada and Japan. Some of these wars are kinetic (the US/NATO war on Russia via Ukraine, the US war on Iran), some are regime change operations (Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia), and some are colour revolutions (Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya) whether “successful” or not. Some of these wars are Western backed insurgencies (Myanmar, Sudan), some are genocidal operations targeting a neighbouring state (Palestine, Lebanon) and some are covert Western backed terrorist operations against sovereign states (Sahelian and other African nations).

The rise of the South

Imperialism’s war on the rising multipolar world is being waged as a last-ditch attempt to salvage the decaying capitalist system and resurrect the old colonial world which has long faded into the past. While it is true that much of the rising multipolar world still operates on the basis of the capitalist mode of production, it is being led by the giant People’s Republic of China (PRC) which has achieved superpower status on the back of a state assisted socialistic mode of production. The stupendous rise of Red China alongside the simultaneous decline of the US Empire is a reflection of the fact that the world is shifting from unipolarity to multipolarity. Unipolarity – the dominance of capitalism under the aegis of the US – is being supplanted by a multipolar world – the PRC and its allies including almost the entire Global South. This process is the beginning of the progress of humanity towards a socialist world, where imperialism does not exist and therefore there is little or no basis for deadly conflict. Multipolarity contains a very real potential of progress towards socialism, and thus imperialism has little option but to wage all out war.

The US war on Russia via Ukraine is arguably the most dangerous conflict currently, in terms of the risk of an outbreak of nuclear hostilities. The ruling classes of Germany and the UK are openly stating that they are preparing to go to war on Russia by 2030, or even earlier. The Russian Federation’s military operations in Ukraine are a necessary defence against a regime change war on Moscow waged by NATO. The CIA has admitted that it is directing the drone and missile attacks deep into Russian territory, and it is only the remarkable restraint shown by Russia’s leaders that has so far prevented a nuclear war. Russia is arguably trying to hold things together until they can remove the Western backed and Nazified Ukrainian government via their painstaking ground operations, rather than immediately retaliate to relentless US/EU provocations. Yet even the astonishing patience of the Russian leadership must run out at a certain stage, given that they are well aware that US and EU imperialism has the clear aim of breaking the Russian Federation into six or seven smaller and more controllable pro-Western states.

Global South fightback

Deteriorating US imperial power is nowhere more graphically demonstrated than in its failed unprovoked war on Iran. From 2011, Western governments waged a horrific proxy regime change war on Syria, creating and enabling ISIS and Al Qaeda terrorists to do just that. After 13 years, Washington “succeeded” in overthrowing the former Syrian republic and installing ISIS into “power”. Imperialism knew it had to remove Syria as an Axis of Resistance ally before it could attempt a regime change war on Iran. Two years prior, imperialism unleashed its proxies in Israel and Palestine to create a genocidal conflict which at a minimum had the aim of drawing Iran into a conflict which could have led to its destruction. Yet the fall of Syria was enough for the Trump Administration to attempt regime change in Iran, first with armed rioters, and then with all out war starting on February 28. However, the Islamic Republic of Iran fought back hard, destroyed or disabled US military bases surrounding it, and prevented the US from ever landing troops on its soil. Iran’s ballistic missiles and drone swarms were enough to maintain control of the Strait of Hormuz and deplete US missile stockpiles in the Middle East and elsewhere. The faltering US war on Iran has even further exposed imperialism’s fast diminishing military and political standing.

Russia’s near defeat of NATO in Ukraine has emboldened a swathe of African states to embark on an unprecedented military and political fightback of its own. Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have united to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and have expelled French troops for the first time. Burkina Faso has announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Paris, a historic rebuke of the former colonial power. Burkina Faso had accused France for years of being behind the tens of thousands of IS (Islamic State) terrorists being deployed to wage deadly chaos and war across the Sahel. Not only in the Sahel, but across Africa, imperialism has armed and funded a collection of terror militias including IS, Al Qaeda, JNIM, Boko Haram and Al Shabaab. The terrorists are enacted to use extreme violence to sow chaos, with the aim being the disruption and further prevention of commercial, trade, military, infrastructure and investment ties with Moscow and Beijing. The AES states have been propelled into action to combat these appalling covert wars, and its successes are now the envy of young Africans across the continent.

The PRC is now an unalloyed superpower in its own right. It is in the process of surpassing stuttering capitalism in the West on almost all fronts – manufacturing, industry, science, engineering, technology and more. The ruling classes of the West are very much aware that their for profit economies have deindustrialised and switched to non-productive financialisation, which causes more economic distortion. Meanwhile, Red China continues to expand its vast economy, providing world class infrastructure, ever rising wages, near complete home ownership, close to zero inflation, and accessible healthcare and education for its working people. Friendly relations with China are today a necessity for any Global South state which desires to climb out of its decades of imperialist enforced dependency.

The contrast for working people in the West could not be more stark. Workers in the US, Europe and Australia are confronting the worst cost of living crisis in living memory, a housing and rental affordability crisis, collapsing infrastructure, a dangerous climate and the distinct lack of hope for the future. Imperialism’s war on the Global South is also a war on the workers of the Global North. Yet a future of harmonious and prosperous socialism for the vast majority is eminently possible if genuine Marxist leaderships can be forged across borders. The rising multipolar world, which amongst other things, aims for the complete and total respect for the sovereign rights of each nation, potentially spells the end of imperialism. The governments of the multipolar states contain all kinds of political contradictions and obstacles. Despite this, the process of establishing an economic, financial and ultimately political alternative to centuries of obsolete colonial rule is one that is most likely to lead to progressive and even revolutionary outcomes. Public ownership of the major means of production combined with planned economies can lay the basis for the elimination of the scourge of imperialist war and depredation.
