Burkina Faso Takes the Path of Revolution Over Western style “Democracy”

11-04-2026: Liberals in the West drew gasps of breath on hearing the statement from Burkina Faso’s military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré that people need to “forget” about democracy. However, the charismatic African leader soon explained the context behind this seemingly iconoclastic remark. “We have to tell the truth: democracy isn’t for us…..democracy kills….look at Libya, it’s a prime example right next to us…Everywhere they try to establish democracy in the world, it’s done with bloodshed…democracy is slavery..”.[1] Traoré went further: “Democracy, we kill children. Democracy, we drop bombs, we kill women, we destroy hospitals, we kill civilian population. Is that democracy? “[2] It is clear that the “democracy” the Burkinabe leader refers to is the false “democracy” of capitalist imperialism, cutting a swathe across Africa, and raining death and destruction on Iran and Lebanon – to which the Iranian state and Hezbollah are hitting back hard against Israel and the US in kind.

Context of Western backed terror

Traoré’s latest statements comes after Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) adopted a bill dissolving all political parties and political groupings in the country. The Minister for State and Territorial Administration and Mobility, Emile Zerbo, stated in February that this measure aims to “better regulate political life and pluralism, preserve national unity, and defend the state”.[3] So rather than an attempt to stifle political interaction and activity within the Sahelian state, the act is an attempt at enabling political discourse within a framework which does not endanger the state. The whole context for this needs to be considered within a years long terrorist insurgency afflicting each of these nations which have now formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This violence sponsored by the West was the basic reason for the 2022 military coup in Burkina Faso, which followed a similar takeover in Mali in 2020, followed by a corresponding coup in Niger in 2023.[4] These military coups have been overwhelmingly popular, and Traoré himself has gained wide popularity as one who continues the legacy of Thomas Sankara, a Marxist inspired leader of Burkina Faso from 1983 until his assassination in 1987.

The AES is beset by appalling jihadist violence, from armed militant groups which scarcely represent the Islamic religion. The violence takes place across the AES states of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso but it also spills over into Benin. All of the armed terror militias are affiliates or off shoots of Al Qaeda and ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), and therefore covertly funded and armed by imperialism. Prominent terror groups include JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat as Islam wal Muslimeen), Ansaroul Islam, Katiba Hanifa and Al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb (AQIM). There has now appeared another breakaway from AQIM which has named itself the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).[5] Almost all of these bloodthirsty mercenaries have drifted across to the Sahel after NATO’s destruction of Libya in 2011.

Revolution

The Western backed death squads engage in livestock theft, the burning of villages, the destruction of bridges and the slaughtering of civilians. The former governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger were widely seen as accommodating or even enabling this terror to continue, hence the popular support for their respective coups and now the AES. There are some reports that Islamic State (IS) and Al Qaeda in Niger were engaged in a “civil war” against each other, with IS claiming that it killed 35 combatants in a battle with Al Qaeda in the village of Bital Koli.[6] While such reports may be true, we have seen imperialism use this playbook before, as a justification for overt intervention to allegedly prevent further conflict. However, both IS and Al Qaeda are funded and armed by the West to unleash terror across Africa in order to counter the influence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This is a key goal of AFRICOM (US Africa Command) going back at least 15 years.[7]

US imperialism is also desperately concerned about the influence of the Russian Federation in the Sahel. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Traoré on February 12 this year. The two signed a substantial package of joint agreements and pledged to take further practical steps in scaling up the full spectrum of long-term bilateral co-operation in greater depth. This is in addition to the Russia-Sahel Alliance format, where two joint ministerial meetings between Russia and the AES have already taken place on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2025.[8] In an attempt to block or at least curtail co-operation between China and Russia and many African countries, but especially in the AES, Western imperialism is more than prepared to unleash mass terrorism and unbridled violence to destablise the region. Many innocent civilians are slaughtered or displaced in these conflicts, with Washington and Brussels arming and funding the protagonists.

In response, Ibrahim Traoré, who has already survived multiple assassination attempts,[9] has appealed to Burkinabe civilians to take the path of revolution. On April 1, Traoré presided over a flag raising ceremony at the Palace of Koulouba which included the launch of the National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation (JEPPC). He gave a stirring speech which outlined three traits of becoming a revolutionary.  He explained that first, a revolutionary is one who loves his homeland and loves peoples and yearns for peace and justice. Secondly, a revolutionary must seek knowledge…the revolutionary seeks knowledge because it is through knowledge that we revolutionise our lives. Finally, the revolutionary is the one who remains firm against the people or leaders who seek to oppress him. The revolutionary firmly opposes the oppressor.[10] These are words and concepts that Western elites can barely tolerate.

Rising Multipolarity

If this was not enough, Burkina Faso (and the AES) have clearly nailed their colours to the mast of the rising multipolar world. In 2025, Burkinabe Foreign Minister Karamoko Traoré stated that “BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa plus 15 other Global South states) is more than a symbol, it is an instrument for promoting multipolarity. The AES stands for multipolarity, and for us the prospect of cooperation with BRICS represents an additional lever for countries that have long been on the periphery to find new spaces for cooperation.”[11] Indeed, three African states are already full members of BRICS – South Africa, Ethiopia and Egypt. It may be only a matter of time before the AES joins BRICS.[12] Either way, the strengthening of the alliance between BRICS and the Global South will continue to advance, leading to a potential alternative path of development for Burkina Faso and its allies.

While a temporary ceasefire appears to be in place between Iran and the US and Israel, there is little doubt that imperialism will continue its many-pronged war on the rising multipolar world – Iran, Russia, China, the AES and the Global South. However, while imperialism is in a state of terminal decline and cannot offer what multipolarity potentially can, imperialism remains extremely dangerous and must be countered on every political front. It is clear that workers of the world need to take a stand with the ascending multipolar world while at the same time seeking to provide leadership to the Global South and working people in the Global North. Leninist vanguard parties based on Permanent Revolution are still a necessity to guide the unconscious historical rise of the multipolar world.
