11-10-2025: In multiple nations across Asia and Africa, Gen Z (Generation Z) has had enough, and have been taking the streets risking all to forge a better future. Spontaneously taking the initiative, Gen Z youths have either forced government reversals of policies announced, wrung serious concessions from their leaders, or have actually overthrown governments and shaken the entire state. Driven by a burning desire for democracy, civil rights, transparency and good governance, governments across large sections of the globe have been put on notice, lest they meet the same fate. All of this has been done without the leadership or guidance of any traditional political parties or trade unions, which has resulted in a leaderless movement unbound by history, enhancing its vitality. Or so the story goes.
Western propaganda
This is, of course, a propaganda narrative of the Western corporate media which has little or no bearing on reality. What is occurring is a string of orchestrated colour revolutions and regime change operations ultimately facilitated by the US ruling class and its numerous deep state and quasi state operatives. Some of these include the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), US Agency for International Development (US AID), billionaire anti-socialist destabiliser George Soros and his Open Society Foundation, the Ford Foundation and more. The New Atlas is arguably the world’s foremost authority on US backed regime change, and it points out that colour revolutions remain the US government’s “uncontested super weapon”[1] some 15 years after the US enabled “Arab Spring” which led to appalling regime change wars in Libya and Syria. In fact, some colour revolutions are so “successful” in replacing an independent leadership with a pro-Washington client state that a vastly expensive military invasion and occupation of a Global South nation is no longer required.
The alleged Gen Z uprisings burst on to the scene last year in Kenya, where around 30 people lost their lives in pitch battles against the government of William Ruto. During the violence, part of Kenya’s parliament was set ablaze and the Red Cross reported that some of its vehicles had been attacked.[2] So much for a progressive Gen Z ! This violence was surpassed by an order of magnitude the following August, when at least 300 people lost their lives in a bloodthirsty frenzy which forced the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee the country in a helicopter. Hasina soon revealed that a representative of the US government had offered to make her problems “disappear” if she allowed a US air base to be established within the borders of Bangladesh.[3] Hasina had just been re-elected barely six months prior to being overthrown with the assistance of Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI), the Bangladeshi chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Arguably, the Gen Z colour revolutions (which are politically reactionary counter-revolutions, not “revolutions”) began in 2022, when Sri Lankan masses overthrew the government of Gotabaya Rajapaksa by literally coordinating their efforts out of the office of the US Ambassador.[4] Yet in recent months, the colour revolutions have been accelerating. In the last week of August, Indonesia was hit by nationwide riots which took the life of motorcycle delivery driver and three people who were burned to death when a building was set on fire in the city of Makassar. Other public buildings and public transport infrastructure were also damaged.[5] In the first week of September, at least 19 people perished when Gen Z youths set fire to large parts of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, leading to the ouster of the government.[6] In the Philippines, Gen Z protests ostensibly over corruption broke out[7] despite the President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr being a decided US government ally. In India, Gen Z protestors set fire to the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) offices in Leh and other skirmishes left four dead and 90 injured in the Ladakh region.[8]
Proxy staging posts
In Morocco, Gen Z youth clashed with police during protests supposedly against the funding and building of stadiums for the 2030 FIFA football World Cup at the expense of hospitals.[9] These actions were claimed to have been organised by youths themselves on social media platforms such as Tik Tok and Discord. The next day, Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina dissolved the government after Gen Z protests lead to the deaths of 22 people and over 100 injured, purportedly over water and power cuts.[10] In East Timor, one of the world’s youngest nations, University students pelted some cars with rocks during demonstrations protesting against the government’s plan to purchase $4.2 million worth of Toyota Prado SUVs for lawmakers – a demand which the government soon conceded. The government also withdrew a plan for lifetime pensions for members of parliament.[11]
Yet the seemingly rational demands of the East Timorese youth are exposed when they displayed One Piece flags from the Japanese anime series, identical to the One Piece skull and crossbones flag flown by Gen Z protestors in Indonesia and Nepal.[12] The CIA is not even trying to be imaginative when supplying their various “spontaneous” uprisings with symbols. The NED, the regime change arm of the CIA, was so involved in the violent overthrow of Nepal and Bangladesh that the new government appointees have had up to decades of collaboration with this essentially fake front. For example, Brian Berletic reports that half of the 8 ministers appointed in Nepal since the violent overthrow of KP Sharma Oli are actually drawn from either the NED, US AID or the CIA proprietary The Asia Foundation or the Soros Open Society funded Samata Foundation.[13] In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in a bloody coup and replaced by none other than Muhammad Yunus, who has worked extensively with the NED/CIA for decades.[14]
The plethora of Gen Z regime change operations, whether “successful” in toppling a government or not, are used by imperialism as proxy staging posts arrayed against the actual targets – the BRICS powers. BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa plus 15 other states) is a non-imperialist bloc which most forthrightly represents the rising multipolar world overcoming the ageing and decrepit unipolar world led by the US and its European adjuncts. Even though BRICS itself is not anti-imperialist or socialist, the very fact that it is offering an alternative to imperialism is enough to earn it the wrath of Washington, London and Brussels. If imperialism can surround Russia, China and even now India with a set of hostile states loyal to the West, the stage will be set for either a slow attritional war or a frontal confrontation, or both. World War III is likely to be the decaying capitalist West (the USA and its European Union subjects) waging a desperate last ditch hybrid war against the BRICS powers and its allies throughout the Global South.
For genuine revolutions
We should not place all blame on young people who are swept up in imperialist subversion, as many of them probably believe that they are actually combatting corruption, fighting against exorbitant salaries of politicians, striving for civil rights and so on. CIA operatives are well versed at presenting this narrative to encourage youths to “fight the system” when in practice they are being manipulated to fight for the capitalist system and against the potentially socialist multipolar world. Young people are impressionable; they can see a world going to the dogs and are rightly concerned about their future. Yet they do not have years of political experience, which would invariably impart are more rounded view about what the problems are, and pathways towards a resolution. Ultimately, the only real resolution are genuine revolutions. However, if the CIA or NED or any of its subsidiaries are in any way involved, what is happening is the complete opposite.
Colour revolutions are reactionary – despite the intentions of some of its participants – and do not contain a shred of progressive content. This is because they are not what they claim to be. The extreme violence contained within them is likely to be carried out by paid hooligans, leading to the claims of some of the participants that their protests were “hijacked” by such elements. It is wholly implausible that throngs of young people one day decided that they had had enough of corruption and decided to go out onto the streets and burn down public buildings and even slaughter innocent people. Equally implausible is any claim that Gen Z youth organised these protests all by themselves on social media. This is naïve – the hand of imperialist subversion through multiple fronts is the conspicuous culprit.
There is a direct correlation between the increasing military and economic power of the BRICS bloc (particularly the military power of Russian Federation, and the gargantuan socialistic economic power of the People’s Republic of China) and the extent to which imperialism will resort to ultra-reactionary US backed colour revolutions to augment imperialist preparations for kinetic wars. Working people need to be keenly aware of the dangers of being drawn in, or indeed cheering on, evident Western intrigue. What is required are genuine workers revolutions in the West, combined with proletarian political revolutions in deformed workers’ states that are nonetheless members of BRICS, such as China, Vietnam and Cuba. At the same time, authentic Marxist vanguard parties need to be forged in order to strategically defend multipolarity as long and as far as it presents a challenge to the rotting edifice of Western capitalism. At a certain point, real revolutionaries may need to break away to help steer the masses onto the path of bona fide workers power and the dawn of a new socialist epoch.
