01-12-2024: It is no exaggeration to say that the planet could be inches away from nuclear annihilation. The lame duck Joe Biden Democrat administration in the United States of America (US) is pulling out all stops to bind the incoming Donald Trump Republican administration into a world war, despite Trump’s pledges to wind down or end the Ukraine proxy war on the Russian Federation. Out of malevolent intent, it seems the Democrats would rather the permanent incineration of human civilisation than allow their coveted NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) armed Nazi brigades in Ukraine hand over sections of the devastated nation, which Russia has won on the ground. Make no mistake, Western imperialism is entirely to blame for the perilously close destruction of human life on Earth. The whole world can see that US imperialism and its European NATO allies are the sole source of the relentless aggression and endless military provocations against Russia – a nuclear armed superpower. Ukraine is but fodder for Washington and Brussels, and the world could be next.
Losing war
Not only is the Democrat administration desperate to make Ukraine as difficult to withdraw from as possible, the losses for the NATO backed Ukrainian forces on the ground to Russia drive ever more reckless plans from the outgoing US administration. The Democrats lost the US election in a landslide to the Republicans, so its dramatic war escalations by allowing Storm Shadow, SCALP and ATACMS missiles to be fired into Russian territory will not affect their current electoral fortunes. The goal doesn’t seem to be escalation for a breakthrough in the war – as the result of the war is already assured. The goal seems to be to buy time so that Kiev is in a stronger position when negotiations begin.[1] The nonsensical claims of “11 000” DPRK (Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea or “North Korea”) troops in the Kursk region[2] fighting for Russia has proven to be false, as Western governments have provided no evidence whatsoever. Like other laughable assertions that Russia is running out of missiles, or using microchips taken from washing machines, these stories are designed to divert attention from the fact that NATO has lost the Ukraine proxy war in all facets – militarily, diplomatically and politically.
Rather than a strategic withdrawal, imperialism is doubling down perhaps in an attempt to retain control of parts of Ukraine to use as a base to further threaten Moscow. On November the 19th, Ukraine (or in reality, NATO) fired six US made missiles at Bryansk on Russian soil. The next day Ukraine (read NATO) fired up to a dozen UK (United Kingdom) made Storm Shadow missiles on Russian soil. The Russian response was devastating. In the early hours of the 21st of November, Russia launched a missile which struck the Yuzmash factory in the Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk. The missile was an “Oreshnik”, a version of the RS-26 hypersonic missile fitted with non-nuclear warheads. This missile flies at a speed of Mach 10 (ten times the speed of sound) or between 2.5 and 3 kilometres per second. Russian President Vladimir Putin is correct to state that nothing that the combined West has in the way of air defence even comes close to being able to intercept it.[3]
The West is outmatched
The Oreshnik missile was built in Russia from 2018, as a result of the Trump Administration voiding and pulling out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), which prevented both the US and Russia from possessing, producing or test-flying ground launched nuclear cruise missiles with a range of 500 to 5500 kilometres.[4] The Oreshnik can split into 18 sub-munitions and with hypersonic acceleration, the West would have no time to respond should it provoke Russia into firing a volley at Europe. Potentially the Oreshnik could destroy all US and NATO military assets in Europe within 20 minutes. The West has not developed hypersonic military capability, so its best option is its stock of nuclear armed Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). Yet if it was pushed to unleash them, Russia’s hypersonic weapons could potentially take out the West’s conventionally powered ICBMs before they had a chance to lift off.[5] The days of the West having unmatched military power over any of its rivals is well and truly over, despite the damage it can still undoubtedly cause.
So why is the world on the brink of nuclear destruction? It is just a case of a lame duck US Administration throwing a spanner in the works out of spite before it leaves office? Although this is also happening, the real reason is that capitalism is dying but the new world is not yet able to be born. Despite this, the new world, which must produce socialism if it is not destroyed beforehand, is certainly on its way. The recent Kazan summit of the BRICS + alliance in October was a portent of things to come.[6] Declining and spiteful imperialism has created the BRICS alliance, which is a non-imperialist bloc which has the support of half of the world’s population. Current full members of BRICS are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. The Kazan Summit announced 13 new partner nations, which are on their way to eventually becoming full members. These are: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Türkiye, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.[7]
BRICS is not socialist or anti-imperialist per se, but it offers a vitally needed alternative to imperialism. Moreover, anchoring the BRICS is undoubtedly the vast economic and manufacturing power of the socialistic People’s Republic of China (PRC), which is surpassing the US in many fields. The PRC’s public ownership of the major means of production and a planned economy has ensured that the average cost of living in China ($686) is 72% less expensive than in the US itself ($2454).[8] Over the last decade, the PRC produced an astonishing 30.9% of all global economic growth, as against 9.0% from the US. On a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) basis, the PRC’s economy is already 19% larger than that of the US.[9] Even the Western government funded anti-China think tank the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has to admit the pre-eminence of the PRC in most fields of industrial and scientific endeavour. ASPI reported last year that the PRC has a “stunning lead” in 37 out of 44 critical and emerging technologies after studying defence, space, energy and biotechnology.[10] The Chinese made electric vehicles now storming automotive markets around the world is just the start.
Sold Out Left Mute
With human civilisation closer to a nuclear apocalypse than at any time previously, one might imagine that those who identify as socialists and anti-capitalists would be marching in the streets week in and week out, warning the working class of the imminent danger. Yet the opposite is the case. In the West, the top officials of trade unions are mute, protecting their material interests as bureaucrats holding back the smallest sign of a genuine struggle against World War III. They are aided immensely by the sold out left – parties and organisations which sell themselves as militant revolutionary “Marxists”, but in practice are anything but. Instead of protesting against a global conflagration, some parts of this self-described left are instead preparing to protest the January 20 inauguration of Donald Trump (!). We are not making this up.[11] The circulating meme sums up this imperial left to a T: “World War III good: Orange Man Bad”. No doubt the Trump administration will likely be a huge obstacle for working people on some issues, but to allow Trump Derangement Syndrome to derail even basic socialist activity gives the game away. As was also made clear with their full-throated endorsement of Covid repression, this faux left is in fact bound to the capitalist system they swear they oppose.
A major stumbling block for the sold-out left are nonsensical claims that Russia is somehow “imperialist”. No one was making this claim in the 1990s, when the former Soviet Union disintegrated after being dismantled by its Stalinist leadership. A social and economic catastrophe ensued, which only begun to be turned around in the early 2000s. “Capitalism” was restored, but one which was very much built on state ownership of major industries. Needless to say, “imperialism” in Russia, or anywhere else, cannot be created in a period of barely 15 years. Nevertheless, some imitation left parties claim that NATO’s proxy war in Ukraine targeting Russia is instead a “proxy imperialist war”.[12] They are joined by other woke left parties which claim that ALL major world powers – the US, Russia and China – are all “imperialist”.[13] The SEP (Socialist Equality Party) make a small attempt to distance themselves, by acknowledging that NATO provoked the Ukraine proxy war on Russia. They then capitulate to imperialist pressure by claiming that “Putin’s invasion” is a “reactionary response” ![14]
Mercifully, the Spartacist League (SL) maintains a correct paper position that Russia is NOT “imperialist”. But with the next breath, they cave in to the propaganda of real (Western) imperialism by calling for the overthrow of both Ukraine and Russia.[15] NATO has effectively overthrown Ukraine on multiple occasions, so they would be pretty chuffed with the overthrow of the Russian Federation! The unfortunate fact is that the entirety of the sold out left will not oppose an imperialist war while there is a Democrat in the Oval Office of the White House. This remains the caseeven ifthe price is the elimination of the human race. This is the basic reason why they opposed the war on Iraq 20 years ago under the Republicans, but strongly backed Democrat led imperialist proxy wars on Libya, Syria and now Russia – with Ukraine as cannon fodder.
Working people are not at all obliged to agree with the politics of the Russian government, but it is obvious that US imperialism is provoking a nuclear war, and it must be stopped in its tracks. The permanent threat of imperialist war can only be removed by workers disarming and dismantling capitalism in the West, brick by brick. This is an enormous task, and the forging of bona-fide workers’ vanguard parties based on authentic Marxism remains critically urgent. Yet workers will be assisted in the tasks which history has called on them to perform by the unfolding march forward of humanity – of which the BRICS process backed by the Global South is but one indicator. Immediately, we call on working people in the US to mobilise in Washington for the rally on the weekend of December 7-8 which raises the strident demand: NO TO NUCLEAR WAR! The warmongers and their agents must be politically defeated before it is too late. #nonuclearwar
