07-03-2026: US imperialism, with its Israeli adjunct, has begun its catastrophic war on the Islamic Republic of Iran, which threatens to plunge the planet into World War III. The atrocities have also begun, with around 160 schoolgirls and other teachers slaughtered in the southern Iranian town of Minab. The name of the school is Shajareye Tayabeh, located in the Hormozgan Province.[1] American President Donald Trump bragged about the assassination of Iran’s spiritual leader[2], the 86 year old Ayatollah Ali Khamanei, in a strike which also killed numerous top military and security advisers, as well as his wife, daughter and granddaughter, after the beginning of Ramadan. The equivalent abomination in the West might be the killing of a senior Christian Archbishop just before Christmas. Yet the Ayatollah embodied the 1979 Iranian revolution, where tens of millions rose up and overthrew the US backed Shah and his ultra-violent secret police, and established an independent republic. Potentially hundreds of thousands or millions of innocent people may die in this blatantly illegal and unprovoked attack by the world’s ailing hegemon.
“Leaders” endorse inhumanity
Australian Labor Party (ALP) Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, flanked by Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defence Minister Richard Marles, were the first international “leaders” to explicitly back the barbarous US/Israeli assault on Iran. Within hours, they declared their support for US actions supposedly to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Inverting reality, Albanese claimed that the Iranian “regime” had been a destabilising force through its ballistic missile and nuclear programs, support for armed proxies, and brutal acts of violence and intimidation.[3] In the real world, Iran has been threatened with a regime change war by the US, Israeli and Australian regimes for more than four decades. It has been subjected to ongoing hostility, sanctions and ostracism by the West for having the temerity to stare down the dark forces of late-stage capitalism. Yet today, Iran has powerful allies in the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), which are also the ultimate targets of a crumbling US/European empire.
In its official statement, the ALP government claimed – without a shred of evidence – that Iran directed at least two attacks on Australian soil in 2024, targeting Australia’s Jewish community.[4] On the basis of feigned outrage in response, the Australian government expelled Iran’s Ambassador, suspended the operations of the Australian embassy in Tehran, and later listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) as a state sponsor of terrorism. This is farcical, as Iran’s IRGC has actively fought against terrorism in West Asia, especially during the US led dirty war on Syria. Iran’s Ambassador to Canberra, Ahmad Sadeghi, was expelled from the country after ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation) determined – without any evidence being offered – that Iran was responsible for the attempt to set fire to the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne and the attack on the Continental Kitchen restaurant in Sydney.[5] These accusations are absurd on their face, not least due to the fact that a substantial Jewish community has lived within Iran for thousands of years,[6] and today enjoy the protection of the Islamic Republic. The expulsion of the Iranian Ambassador from Australia was a sure sign that the Australian elite knew that a cataclysmic war on Iran was being prepared and was already taking steps to prepare it.
False flag anti-Semitism
In the lead up to the May 3 federal election, there was a string of highly suspect anti-Semitic graffiti attacks in Sydney. Amongst other incidents, a childcare centre in Maroubra was spray painted, as was the Mount Sinai College in Sydney’s east. In one of them, Israel was misspelt as “Israiel”, raising suspicions about the abilities of those carrying them out. Months later, police admitted that the graffiti incidents were done by petty criminals who were paid off to do so,[7] i.e., they were false flags. Soon after these episodes, a “caravan of explosives” was discovered in Dural, a semi-rural suburb of north-Western Sydney. The caravan supposedly also contained a note saying “F__ the Jews”. It was treated as a terrorist act, but after an investigation even the federal police admitted it was part of a fake terror plot by organised criminals.[8] Despite this, hate speech laws were rushed through the New South Wales (NSW) parliament in response to what soon turned out to be a plain hoax.[9]
Even more draconian hate speech laws were also the outcome of what was almost certainly a staged false flag on Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025. The mainstream media version of the event has holes which a truck could be driven through. There was Arsen Ostrovsky daubed in fake blood, casually giving TV interviews in a bandage with the “blood” everywhere. The alleged shooters placed a dodgy ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) flag on their Hyundai vehicle before beginning to “open fire” on Jewish Hanukkah celebration – when the real ISIS has only ever collaborated with the Israeli state. The shooters were allowed to fire bolt action rifles at the crowd for a full 20 minutes before police intervened – with the Bondi police station just minutes away. Then the famed hero who temporarily disarmed one of the shooters turned out to be a former Syrian who was a supporter of the ISIS “president” Muhamad Al-Jolani – who reportedly phoned him while he was recovering in hospital. To top it off, the attack came days after the federal government imposed an unpopular youth social media ban.[10]
All of these false flags appeared to have several aims. Firstly, they created a manufactured anti-Semitism to create a pretext for hate speech laws which decimate basic free speech and crush elementary democratic rights, such as the right to protest. Much of this was directed towards the pro-Palestine movement, which was a necessary response to Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. The overtly nationalist and binary nature of the pro-Palestine movement, however, did allow the state to infer, albeit inaccurately, that their protests were anti-Semitic. Secondly, like all false flags, they were used to terrorise working people into submission, to fear a violence which was not there in reality and bolster support for the state which is “protecting” you. Thirdly, they were used to whip up support for a diabolical war on Iran, by demonising the Islamic Republic and its Russian and Chinese allies.
War on the Global South
While it is the case that US imperialism has sought to reverse the 1979 Iranian revolution for 47 years, today there is a desperate urgency on the part of Washington due to Iran’s role as a pillar of the multipolar world. Iran, Russia and China are the strongest obelisks of the BRICS bloc (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa plus 15 other states) which is offering a rapidly developing alternative to the 500 years of capitalist colonialism of Europe and the USA. BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), amongst other multipolar bodies, offer financial and military cooperation against the ever-increasing encroachments on sovereignty by Washington and Brussels. This alternative is warmly embraced by almost the entire Global South, representing some 90% of the world’s population. Tottering capitalism in the West is aghast at this prospect, and thus resorts to hybrid war on the world – sanctions, colour revolutions, regime change operations and regime change wars, regardless of the cost.
This is why the war on Iran is a link in the chain of World War III which imperialism must unleash if it is to have a chance at maintaining its fast-fading hegemony. Thus the war on Iran is not separate to the kidnapping of the Venezuelan President, the starvation siege of Cuba, the proxy war on Russia via Ukraine, and the proxy war on China via Taiwan. This is a major reason why the left cannot afford to engage in any calls for “regime change” in Iran, even as it might imagine there can be a regime change in Iran which is somehow not connected to Iranian ex-pat monarchists, Mossad and the CIA. This is a fantasy for Iran, with the US state already seeking to mobilise terrorist militias such as the MEK (Mujahedin E Khalq), the US backed Baluchistan Liberation Army, Kurdish contras (which do not represent all Kurds) and ISIS militants freed from jails by ISIS Syrian “President” Al Jolani. While class struggle socialism is the aim for the Middle East and the world, the first contradiction is imperialism.
Working people in Australia and internationally have a material interest in the defence of Iran and the Global South, not least due to the potentially disastrous economic fallout. Iran has taken the necessary step in self-defence of closing the Strait of Hormuz, blocking much of the world’s oil supply. This could lead to a tripling in the price of oil and gas, and a corresponding increase in the cost of basic goods and services due to transportation costs. Western economies themselves could grind to a halt, throwing millions of workers out of employment. This is a scenario which must be avoided at all costs, and therefore, the imperialist war on Iran and its multipolar allies must be stymied. There is also the constant threat of nuclear war, with the US potentially considering using a “tactical” nuclear weapon against Iran, and Israel possibly resorting to using its nuclear weapons which it has always denied exist.
While the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China are supplying Iran with much military and surveillance hardware, they are unlikely to intervene directly to combat US imperialism. The leaderships of Russia and China do not have a class struggle perspective, domestically or internationally. While they may take measures to defend themselves and their allies against the imperialist West, they will not lead moves towards workers’ power. This political task falls to much needed Marxist vanguard parties, East and West, many of which have yet to be formed. In the meantime, working people should link the war abroad to the war at home – the housing crisis, the rental and food affordability crisis, access to healthcare and more, as it is but one war. Capitalism must end. No War on Iran! US/Israeli troops: Get Out of Syria! US bases out of the Middle East! No Weapons for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan!
