Venezuela: No To Regime Change War!

18-10-2025: The Nobel Peace Prize has been a farce since Henry Kissinger, the architect of the US war on Vietnam, was awarded it in 1973. Yet this years Nobel Peace prize winner has firmly buried decades old credibility. The 2025 award goes to extreme right-wing opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who promptly dedicated the winning of the award to US President Donald Trump.[1] The term “far-right” is thrown about with abandon by some in modern discourse, but in this case it is no exaggeration at all to label Corina Machado as far-right. In 2018, Corina Machado wrote an open letter to Zionist Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asking for Israel to lead a military invasion of Venezuela to overthrow the Bolivarian Republic, led by President Nicolas Maduro. Two years later Corina Machado signed a cooperation agreement with Netanyahu’s Likud Party.[2] Corina Machado is currently in hiding, unable to show her face in Venezuela, due to a public backlash for repeatedly demanding the violent overthrow of her nation over the previous two decades.

Imperial collaboration

At each step, Corina Machado has collaborated directly with US imperialism in her efforts to reverse the Bolivarian revolution, beginning with the election of former paratrooper Hugo Chavez in 1998. Multiple times during the Chavez and the Maduro led administrations, Corina Machado has attempted to lead the reactionary overthrow of the Venezuelan government, using almost any means. In 2019, she backed Juan Guaido who declared himself the President of Venezuela despite never running in a presidential election. President Maduro stated on several occasions that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $700 million to Guaido to foster destabilisation in Venezuela.[3] This regime change attempt failed, as has every effort to overthrow the Bolivarian revolution due to massive popular support for its proclaimed “Socialism of the 21st Century”.

Corina Machado, far from advocating peace or having anything to do with any peace efforts, has strongly supported devastating US government sanctions on Venezuela. In 2024, the Venezuelan Attorney General’s office alleged that Machado has committed treason and conspiracy with foreign nations under articles 128 and 132 of Venezuela’s Criminal Code, as well as organised crime under Organised Crime Law. This was in response to Machado’s public backing for the US governments BOLIVAR Act, which prohibits the US government from contracting with any person or entity that conducts business with Venezuelan authorities not recognised by the US government.[4] The US backed right-wing Venezuelan opposition claimed that the results of the 2024 Presidential election were fraudulent, and that they were won by Machado’s stand in, Edmundo Gonzalez. Yet the moderate Venezuelan right-wing and the far-right Venezuelan right wing – in collaboration with Washington at every turn – has claimed this with every election won by “Chavistas” over 20 years.

External and internal regime change

US imperialism is gunning for regime change in Venezuela, and the Trump Administration is currently blowing up boats off the coast which it claims contain drug runners – without even a semblance of due process. In addition, around 4000 US Marines are accompanying a flotilla of warships sitting provocatively off the Venezuelan coast. Given its history, it is clear that Washington is either preparing an invasion of Venezuela or is applying enough external pressure to ensure the Venezuelan right-wing it backs can trigger an internal collapse. Both external war and internal destabilisation being prepared by the US government has the same aim – regime change and the termination of the Bolivarian revolution. Corina Machado has also publicly stated that the aim is also to assist US imperialism in taking down and removing other left-wing governments in the region, such as the socialistic Republic of Cuba and Nicaragua under the leadership of Daniel Ortega. It is in the vital interests of working people to firmly resist US imperialism’s drive to finally end any hint of socialism in Latin America.

Unfortunately, some sections of disgruntled left in Venezuela and internationally have turned against the Bolivarian revolution they once fully backed. Decrying the Maduro administration for allegedly being “authoritarian” and “anti-worker”, they claim that they oppose the US military invasion of Venezuela while simultaneously agitating against the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) government.[5] While there can be any number of political criticisms of the Maduro led government, this “left” imagines that their regime change will somehow be something of an entirely different character to the regime change imposed by Washington’s gunboats and possible “decapitation strikes”. This is an illusion. Imperialism is using both military provocation and internal right-wing destablisation as part of one combined process. The disaffected Venezuelan “left” and its international backers will not and cannot carry out a “left-wing” regime change operation at the same time as US imperialism is conducting its own very right-wing regime change operation. For, if the “left” aims at toppling Maduro, it would not make sense to oppose the kinetic and material force of the US empire to do just that.

This “left” is anything but. The faux left is a reflection of the dire concern that imperialism has about Venezuela forging political and military ties with the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Iran. On top of this, Venezuela is forging towards becoming a member of the non-imperialist BRICS bloc and is a champion of rising multipolarity. Of course Washington desires an end to “socialism” in Latin America, and Venezuela’s massive oil reserves are a factor – but it is the alliances with the enemies of Wall Street that are the real concern. To be sure, genuine socialism led by authentic Marxism needs to come to the fore in Latin America. Yet this will not be achieved without resisting the empire. NO TO REGIME CHANGE WAR ON VENEZUELA !
